Beyond Appearances

It's the day of the 40th anniversary of the twin sisters Alexandra and Manon. Together with their brothers Benoît and Guillaume and mother Jeanne, Alexandra waits for Manon, the other birthday child, to join them. But Manon fails to turn up. After hours of waiting, the family becomes concerned and starts looking for Manon. But she has simply vanished.

The police search the area around the brook but find no trace of Manon. She appears to have vanished into thin air. As the police investigation makes no progress, Alexandra decides to make enquiries of her own. Among Manon's personal papers, she comes across a medical examination report that reveals that Manon was pregnant.

Convinced that he is somehow responsible for the death of his sister, Guillaume turns himself in. Initially, Detective Chief Superintendent Gabriel Lacroix doubts that Guillaume is the culprit. But more and more evidence pointing to Guillaume as the killer comes to light.

As soon as it becomes clear that Manon had not been the victim of a crime, the police close the file, leaving the family alone in their grief and their desperate need to know why Manon took her own life. Alexandra assumes that her death has something to do with her relationship with that mysterious man whose child Manon was carrying.

Alexandra confronts Martin, the headmaster. He freely admits that he had an affair with Manon. At the same time, he feels not in any way responsible for her death. During their encounter, he tells Alexandra that Manon often behaved strangely. The fact that Manon was the twin sister of a glamourous actor excited Martin. When Manon became aware of this, she began impersonating her sister.

Alexandra leaves the hospital. Luckily, she has no lasting injuries from her accident. What she remembered on her drive home was the car accident in which her father died. From time to time, he let his daughters drive the car, although they were only 15 years old. The day of the accident, it was Alexandra's turn to take the place behind the steering wheel.
