Vienna, 1909. Oskar is baffled when the director of security agrees to a secret rendezvous with a notorious, recently captured criminal.

A murder takes Oskar and Max's investigation into a world of underground gambling. Oskar's life continues to be complicated by his feelings for Therese who he tries to help by threatening her ex-husband. The course of love runs no smoother for Max - are he and Clara not meant to be together?

Max is in a coma and the doctors don't know if he will survive. Oskar is racked with guilt. Oskar knows only that Max's assailant is linked to his pursuit of Mephisto. Despite the Commissioner's warning to stay away, Oskar investigates. When Oskar is forced to go on the run, his old friends stand by him but then Oskar is connected to a second murder.

Still in hiding, Oskar identifies the high-powered gamblers at a secretive game Max joined before he was shot. He can't connect the gamblers and Mephisto but he knows that he's making someone nervous. When a lead finally takes Oskar to a rendezvous with Mephisto, he finds himself in the middle of an assassination attempt that could precipitate a world war.
