The Ahern clan gather for Val's rather speedy remarriage to the mysterious Paul. Everyone is surprised by the arrival of Elaine, who has been let out of prison early and invited by Jacob. When she reveals that Grace had visited her in prison, Jenny and Anna are shocked and set out to discover why.

Anna confronts her new stepfather Paul about their own one night stand and invites him to the hotel. After another run-in with Val, Elaine's drinking gets out of hand and Jenny seeks Frank's help as she investigates Grace's death.

With Elaine in hospital, Anna and Jenny search her home for a phone that might link her to Grace's death. Jacob turns to Mairead for help and tells her about his problems with Paul. After Leon approaches Jenny in town, claiming to have come to surprise Finn, she invites him round for dinner and unwittingly places the family in danger.

Val and Paul tell the family about their plans to turn the house into a therapy centre and both Carol and Frank express their concerns. With a woman in intensive care in hospital, the Garda approach Elaine about the dent on her car.

Gabriel confesses to Elaine that he was driving her car the night of the accident. Anna and Jenny make a shocking discovery about Grace's treatment and try to alert Val to the threat she faces from Paul.

Val appears in court, charged with Paul's murder. As the events of the night of his death are slowly pieced together, the courts and the Gardai question whether they have accused the right person.
